Hermitage 2009

by Stephen Tanzer, March 13

“Smoky raspberry and blackberry aromas are complemented by notes of vanilla, clove and cola.  Cherry-cola and violet pastille flavors are given lift by juicy acidity, which adds back-end cut.  Round, seductive and open-knit right now but some late-arriving, sweet tannins suggest that this wine will reward patience.”

Situation: Northern Côtes-du-Rhône, left bank.

Grape Variety: Syrah 100%.

Type of Soil: Granite, fluvio glacial alluvium. Vines planted on steep terraces.

Climate: Microclimate with Mediterranean influence, very sunny (the vineyard is south oriented) and protected from northern winds.

Yield: 35 hl per ha (maximum authorized 40 hl/ha)

Area of the Appellation: 130 ha - 98 for red (325 acres - 245 for red)

Vinification: Long and classic vatting (20 days). Running off when the wines are warm, directly into French oak barrels. 50% in new oak. Maturing : 18 months. The malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel.

Characteristics: Deep dark colour with purplish tints. Rich nose of red and ripe fruits with vanilla, grilled and spicy notes. The palate is rich and generous with strong but silky tannins. Good length, full-bodied and persistent. Racy and attractive wine - Great ageing potential.
